David Woodward

Oct 10th 1947 — Jul 18th 2023 (75 years)

Biography

David (Woody) Philip Woodward passed away on Tuesday, July 18th, 2023, at the age of 75. Born in Tredegar, Wales, he emigrated to Saskatoon with his parents, Harold and Margaret Woodward, in 1956. Two years later, the family permanently made Regina their home. Woody began his career in adult education. The following 27 years were mostly spent as an elementary school teacher at Creighton School. He enthusiastically shared his love of Robert Munsch with his grade 3 students. In the staff room, he was called “Horseshoe Woody” for his clever cribbage moves. Beyond the classroom, he devoted much of his spare time to volunteering and proudly supported the Flin Flon Bombers, the Pilot Butte Storm, and the Regina Thunder. Woody never missed an opportunity to buy 50/50 or raffle tickets in support of sports programs. A sports lover to the core, with a passion for everything from hockey to football to golf, he knew every story and stat in the book, no matter how obscure. But Woody's love of entertainment extended far beyond sports. He enjoyed concerts and musicals, most often booking a group of tickets to include friends in the experience. Throughout his life, he surrounded himself with dear friends, sharing bonds that lasted a lifetime. Brian Erb, his friend since 1971, was like a brother to him. Bobbi and Ron Yanko, friends from high school, have remained pillars of support through the years. He shared 50 years of marriage with Kathleen (Davies), his rock and partner in all life's adventures; Melanie and Paula, his equally determined and social daughters; and his two granddaughters, Xiola (24) and Audrey (3), whom he read countless books to and playfully teased. He was so very proud of his girls. Woody's departure from this world had been a slow realization, but his determination never wavered. We often joked that he had surpassed 9 lives and was working on his second cat! As we say our goodbyes, we can't help but imagine him reuniting with his Pelican Narrows pals at the tee box with a drink in hand or enjoying a summer evening of fishing on Jan Lake with his Creighton buddies. Rest easy, dear Woody. May your tenacity inspire us all never to give up. The funeral will be held at St. Augustine Parish in Wilcox, SK, on Tuesday, July 25th at 2 pm led by Father Parker Love. A light luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, and in honour of Woody’s love of sport, we ask that you donate to Kids Sport @ https://kidsportcanada.ca/saskatchewan/ to help cover the costs of enrollment so that all kids aged 5-18 years can play a season of sport. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Jodi Spelay and her vascular team for the 20 years of incredible care and friendship; Dr. Meena Pole for her unfailing attention to David’s general health, and the doctors and nurses in emergency and the SICU at the Regina General Hospital for their exceptional care.

Cam always had tons of story involving him and Woody and all of them made us laughed. I will always love the time we spent with your whole family in Flin Flon. Woody taugh Rory and Rhiannon to fish with a small piece of hockey stick and a sting and it worked! We had a wonderful time and we will always cherish that. Love to you all

Woody was part of my extended family growing up, or at least in my eyes he was. He played a special role as part of my dad’s ‘teacher friends’ that cannot be replaced. I will always remember his laugh and good natured spirit. My husband Chris and I are sending the entire Woodward family, especially Kathleen and the girls, our love and condolences.

I met Woody at the U of S in 1971. We enjoyed great times at U of S playing intramural sports, skipping classes, playing cribbage and partying like it was 1969.

Despite the fact that we didn’t see much of each other since our university years we managed to stay in touch . I had the opportunity to teach with Woody in Lashburn early in our careers before he moved on to Creighton. I can still remember those late night cribbage games where he always managed to take my hard earned cash.

My last meeting with Woody and Kathleen was at a Grey Cup celebration in Toronto where we had dinner together and rehashed old times.

I considered Woody as one of my dear friends and I was saddened to hear of his passing.

My condolences to Kathleen, his daughters and grandchildren. Rest in peace my friend.

I taught with Woody in Creighton for many years. Such a simple statement which entails so much. He was a valued friend at work and away from it and a kindred spirit in many ways. Co-councillors for the STF, staff room zcrib games, fishing trips, wine making, even a road trip to Regina for the 1995 Grey Cup, but here’s a thing I appreciated about him greatly that perhaps people are unaware of. We frequently shared classroom time and perhaps because I am indigenous, over time I became convinced Woody always saw the child not any label. He loved kids - all kids. I’m sure he was unaware I was observing him and further, learning from him, sometimes for what he didn’t do as much as for what he did. I thought of him as “colourblind” although it went deeper than that. Creighton School was a better place with him in it. So was the town and because he influenced so many kids, in some ways the future. I’m going to miss him. I’ll love him forever, miss him for always. Deepest condolences to Kathleen and Woody’s entire family from June and me.

The loss of my dearest friend is devastating. We met at the U of S in 1971 and enjoyed many cribbage game with Chick Kennedy, these 2 "older" guys took me under their wings and kept me on the straight and narrow ( wrong ). One night after a Huskie hockey game ( it was very cold ) we didn't want to walk back to Seager Wheeler. The opposing teams bus was running in the parking lot warming up and no one was in it. We boarded the bus, Woody donned the drivers hat and we had a cozy ride home. We left the bus ( still running ) in our parking lot. I can't remember what ever happened to the hat.

We met Woody in about 2013 through his wonderful wife, Kathleen. We enjoyed times with them both in Arizona and in Regina. Woody was an extremely positive man with many enthusiasms and interests. We could talk with him for hours without running out of "material". He was a strong yet gentle, guy among gals, look on the bright side man who didn't waste time on what-if's, but only on what-cans. He lived his life fully and generously, and we were honoured to know him. His wife, Kathleen, was a devoted, loyal, supportive, and positive yet practical partner who supported Woody to the max, and who made his life possible and enjoyable to the end. Bless them both.
