Donna Stewart

Aug 9th 1928 — Feb 20th 2023 (94 years)

Biography

Sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, Donna Mary Stewart (Schuyler) passed from this life 3:45 Monday morning, February 20, 2023 at Hospice Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia. At 94 years of age she passed away quietly after declining health due to kidney disease. Donna is survived by her two sisters, Sharon Petheram and Thelma Kay Cross as well as her children, Bruce (wife Colleen) and Grant (wife Sharon) Taylor, and Shelley (husband Richard) Pretty. Additionally Donna is survived by nine grand and fifteen great grand children. She was loved and cherished by her direct children as well as her step grand children. She endeared herself to all. Donna was a farm girl beginning her life in Simcoe Ontario. The first of a family of six she grew up with a loving family on a mixed farming operation. As first born she had a full early life of helping with farming chores then onto helping with care for her siblings as they came into the family. What a time that must of been. Two younger brother, Max and Fred, and three younger sister, Thelma Kay, Lazelle and Sharon. Donna graduated from Simcoe High School in 1947 with a Commercial Diploma. Donna married her first husband in 1950, Robert Taylor Beginning her family in Simcoe. In 1959 Donna and her first husband Bob Taylor moved to North Bay Ontario continuing to raise their family there until Bob’s death in 1979. After Bob’s death Donna began her travelling life moving from North Bay, to Huntsville and onto Oshawa doing various jobs along the way. In 1991 Donna moved to Fort Meyers, Florida, marrying her second husband David Stewart where she and David lived and travelled for many happy years. During these years Donna lived right across the street from her life long best friends Hazel and Loyd Jacobson (passed in 1993). Hazel was Donna’s first husbands sister and they continued a great relationship until Hazels passed in 2006. After David died in 2003 Donna stayed in Florida for many more years enjoying the company of her family who had much joy visiting her in Florida. In 2015 Donna was convinced by her children to return to Canada. While being a healthy 87 year old at the time she was persuaded to moved the Nova Scotia so that she could be closer to family. Not that she needed much medical care, beyond hearing aids. She always came off as being much younger than her actual years. The simplest pleasures in life brought joy to Donna. Donna was a wonderful seamstress and baker, icing beautiful doll cakes for many of her girls, birthday parties. Boys of course got plain cakes with wonderfully thick icing. Coins were often baked into these cakes. Fortunately no one damaged or lost teeth. However I can think of at least one cousin who mistakenly swallowed their coin. Whoops. Also Donna became an avid sports fan in her later years, following her favourite sports teams. Donna’s Health was quite good until high blood and kidney diseases start to take their tole in the last two years. Donna however had good mobility, all be it with a walker, right up to the day before going to hospice on February 7, 2023. The Hospice Halifax staff provided wonderful, loving care for mom during her last days. With this in mind please direct your gifts of remembrance to Donna’s memory by donating to Hospice Halifax online at https://Hospicehalifax.ca/ways-to-give/donate/ or by phone at 902-446-0929 or lastly by cheque payable to Hospice Halifax at 618 Francklyn Street, Halifax, NS B3H 3B4. Celebration of life to be held July 8th at 2PM at; Colborne Village United Church (Old Windham United Church) 30 Glendale Crescent, Simcoe, Ontario

Donna was a special person to us, a Mom across the street. Her and tigger were well known here and was truly lost when she moved home. Her spirit is still in that house, so many talk till today, remember Donna and Tigger? The walks in the mornings meeting up with so many., sitting by each others pool, cooling off. The long talks, jokes and just pure kindness. She will be in our hearts forever. Till we meet again! We know Tigger is in your arms. ❤️

We always think of Donna as having such a wonderful smile and greeting us warmly. We feel fortunate to have known her.

A special memory for us is her 90th birthday party that she shared with my Mom’s 89th. It was such a great celebration!

I MISS YOU MOM,

I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new.

I thought about you yesterday, and days before that too.

I think of you in silence and often say your name.

All I have are memories and your pictures in frames.

Your memory is my keepsake with which I'll never part.

Dad has you now in his keeping and I have you in my heart.

Rest in peace - I'll love you forever Mom

Donna and I go way back. Bob got Bill into service with Union Gas when they were in their teens and they remained good friends all their lives. We often visited their home in North Bay and the guys went fishing. I remember taking a two-week camping vacation in PEI with Donna and Bob (and Shelley) about 50 years ago. Bob and Bill went lobstering. In later years, we visited in Fort Meyers, Florida. Donna and I stayed in touch by telephone and mail and remained friends for over 70 years. I will miss you, my friend.

My Nanny (Donna) was a remarkable woman in so many ways. She had a heart of gold and was always there for us, no matter what. She loved to spoil us when ever we were with her - I will never forget waking up in Florida to fresh oranges from her orange tree, or the delicious food she would make for us. She had a talent for turning the simplest things into something special, and her love and generosity always shone through.

She was always up for an adventure or a sail boat trip, and she never lost her sense of wonder and curiosity. I have so many wonderful memories of going for walks, tea in Fort Langley, or watching sports together. She was our biggest fan growing up, and she never missed a holiday, birthday, or special occasion. I'm going to miss getting cards in the mail from her, but I know that she will always be with us in spirit.

One of my favorite memories of her was when she attended our wedding. She looked so beautiful and radiant, and seeing her there, surrounded by family and friends, made the day even more special. It's a memory I will always treasure.

Even on her final days she had the strength to smile and blow a kiss to our little Emilia, her great granddaughter who she resembles so much.

I know that her spirit will live on in the memories we share. She touched so many lives with her kindness, humor, and strength, and I feel honored to have been a part of her life. Rest in peace, nanny. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

We were so incredibly blessed to have such an amazing grandmother/great grandmother in our lives.

I’ll never forget Donna’s laugh, contagious smile, generosity, and caring attitude. I’ll miss having her to chat with about sports! Halifax just won’t be the same without her.

We are so happy that Hudson got to meet his GG and spend the first 9 months of his life getting some good GG snuggles.

We love and miss you so so much GG.

Donna was one of the strongest ladies I ever met. I hope I can put into practice some of the things I learned from her. She had the ability to put the bad things behind her and only think about the positive going forward. That quality was very admirable. She was a very kind person and everybody she met here in Nova Scotia instantly liked her.. My grandchildren who called her GG (for great grandmother) all loved her very much. Luke and Isaac and their mom and dad Aimee and Chris, loved to take her out for ice cream, Rowan and Ben and their dad John liked to stop at her apartment for a visit on their way home. Little Hudson was cuddled by Donna when Alina and Dan would bring him by when back in Bedford. I will miss her very much and there will be a void in our daily routine now. You will ever be in my heart and mind Donna, love you very much, and know you’re looking down on us with love.

I feel so lucky to have had Donna / GG living in Nova Scotia where I could get to know her and my boys could too. We all enjoyed her over the last several years here. Donna was my step-grandma but more like a loving extra grandma that we were all so lucky to have in our lives. She was a wonderful great grandma to my boys. And I have never met such a big baseball fan! We love and miss you Donna/GG.

If there is one thing I knew about Donna, it was that she made a difference in hundreds of lives in her 94 years. In the 50+ years I knew her, I admired her for so many things. She raised three wonderful children and built many life-long friendships and loved everyone in her life unconditionally. Among the things that made her happiest in her golden years, was helping families in need in her community, her mentoring work with teen mothers, visits from her family and spending time with senior without families of their own. When Donna was in her 80's, she and Tigger would visit senior homes every week in Fort Myers, to bring smiles and joy to residents. I remember her giggling, and saying "I'm off to see my old folks", many who weren't even as old as she was! She leaves an indelible memory on all of us and a smile in my heart that time will never fade. Love you Mom D. Rest in Peace.

Poem

It’s been just about a week since you left us and just remembering all the happy times we had together. One of earliest memories is the stars on the beach in Ontario I remember being in aww it was so beautiful maybe 4 years old and Cherry picking and dad falling off the ladder and gma laughing so hard she peed her pants. The summer she spent with the kids and I. The smiles the laughter the hugs. We must have watched phantom of the opera 4 times. Her afternoon naps on the couch for a quick recharge. Many other memories come to mind trips to Florida and Halifax. I will forever miss our weekend conversations and FaceTime chats. Like I said to you before your passing this is not good bye but until we meet again . Love you gma
