Kevin McGuigan

Apr 18th 1955 — Jun 8th 2022 (67 years)

Biography

With deep sadness we share the loss of Kevin McGuigan, who passed peacefully on June 8th, 2022, at age 67, surrounded by family. Kevin was a remarkable person. A loving husband of 43 years to Coleen, a proud father to his four sons, Ryan (Dallas), Cory (Chantelle), Mark, and Trevor (Annie), and to his grandsons, Colin, Evan, and Dawson, and his granddaughter, Riley. Kevin was born on Prince Edward Island, son of the late Theodore and Mary (McCarron) McGuigan, and raised on a farm with his eight siblings, Donna (Ed) Kilfoil, Virginia (Harold) Affleck, Pauline (Ash) McGuigan, Michael (Carol) McGuigan, Bernadette (Dave) Gallant, Rudy McGuigan, Bobby McGuigan, and the late Garry McGuigan. Kevin is also survived by many nieces and nephews, his brother-in-law, Kirk Johnson, and pre-deceased by his sister-in-law, Trisha Johnson. Kevin was dedicated to his family – carting his four sons to every activity, coaching them in every sport, and in life. Kevin had a long and successful career as an accountant with Revenue Canada in Halifax. He loved his work. He was known for his impressive memory and sharp math skills. Kevin endured many hardships in life, though he did not see it that way. For the past 35 years he suffered from Parkinson’s. Despite overwhelming challenges, Kevin did not complain or dwell on what he could not change. He lived with perseverance and optimism, and without regret. Despite the disease’s progression, Kevin was able to live at home because of the love, care, and support of his wife Coleen. He lived the best life he could thanks to her. Kevin will be dearly missed and always loved and remembered. Donations can be made in Kevin’s name to the Parkinson’s Society Nova Scotia (parkinsonsocietynovascotia.com/donate/).

I met Kevin back in 1974, we were both standing in line to sign up for some UNB courses, we became friends and roomed together briefly both at UNB and later in Ottawa where we were both training to become CRA auditors. One of my vivid memories is the time Kevin forgot his key to our apartment on Lees Avenue on the 14th floor one Saturday night, I arrived shortly after he did , but we missed each other in the elevator. I went into the apartment only to find Kevin knocking on the outside of the balcony door after he hand climbed up 14 floors on the outside of the building. I guess this speaks to his determination at overcoming adversity. Coleen came to live with us briefly at near the end of our training in 1977 and obviously fell in love. Our careers never really crossed paths after this, but I did just want to add my condolences to Coleen and family and attest to Kevin's strong character, intellect and perseverance at overcoming obstacles.

First of all, I am so very sorry to hear of Kevin's passing. I had the privilege of getting to know Kevin through our employer, CRA. He was such a special kind of human being. He ALWAYS asked how my family was doing. He had an incredible memory and was so intelligent. If I had a tax question, he was my go to guy. I don't ever recall Kevin complaining about his own health issues. He was more concerned about how you were doing. Kevin, you go rest easy now. A job WELL done here. See you on the other side bud.

I first met Kevin when the Halifax TSO was formed from Taxation and Excise/GST in December 1994. It became very evident to me that Kevin was a brilliant individual who was highly respected by his colleagues and tax practitioners for his knowledge and application of the Income Tax legislation.

I was very fortunate to have worked with Kevin over the next 16 years, to get to know him professionally and personally, to share travel stories and pictures, to go to lunch with him and explore his ideas and to see him put into practice innovative activities that benefited the TSO. One in particular that I remember vividly was his initiative to bring accounting courses into the TSO. This not only benefited the Audit staff but also played a great role in assisting other staff members in their career development.

Kevin was truly remarkable and has left a lasting and extremely positive impact on the TSO and all his colleagues.

He will be fondly remembered by many.

To the McGuigan family, so sorry to hear of your loss. I first met Kevin when I was a CRA Enquires resource agent. He was a very kind, intelligent and person. He was always willing to assist no matter how busy. He was a caring person and I later was in audit during his latter years with the department and as his disease progressed his dedication to helping did not wane. He was a gem that cannot be replaced.

Kevin was an extraordinary human being, an exemplary example of the human spirit. You could not help but be inspired by his humanity and his grit. The twinkle in his eye, his good humour and sense of humour…I will remember him always. My regret is not getting in touch when thinking of him, which was as recent as a few days ago. Kevin’s family was key to the tenacity with which he dealt with that which life dealt him, the love and support of Colleen especially was everything. Thank you for being my friend, Kevin, I will always remember you. Rest In Peace.

Dorothy and I send our deepest condolences to Coleen and your family on Kevin's passing. I cannot say it better than Neil did but I will add that I first met Kevin in September 1997 sitting at his window desk just below the Town Clock reviewing section 85 elections. We talked for several minutes about what those filings were revealing and I immediately knew Kevin not only had a sharp mind and wealth of knowledge about income tax law, but he was a dedicated employee passionate about his work and someone all Canadians were fortunate to have working for them. Kevin, you will be missed by everyone you knew and touched in life.

I am very saddened to hear of Kevin’s passing. Kevin had a brilliant mind and had an incredible amount of knowledge of tax legislation that he generously shared with others. Administratively, he not only applied the legislation correctly but also with fairness and common sense. He was very well respected within the CRA and also with outside tax practitioners and private industry. Kevin was truly inspirational in both his work ethic and in life. He was one of the finest individuals in every respect that I have ever known. Sincere Condolences.
